We proceeded to delve into all things India Pale Ale, or IPA. Starting with the lowest ABV was a session beer, intended to be under 5.00%, having a balance between malt and hop characteristics and a clean finish. Basically very drinkable! American and English IPAs will have an ABV range between 5.0 to 7.5%. A Double IPA, also referred to as an Imperial IPA will fall between 7.0 to 14.0%. Last but not least, the extra hopped triple weighs in at 10% or higher!
The constant message throughout the evening was that as new IPA styles are ever evolving, this makes it difficult for beer regulators and judges to remain knowledgeable of all of the emerging categories. Older styles are continuously being manipulated to create newer styles and sub-categories. As a result, style guidelines and categories are constantly changing to keep up with the evolution of craft brewing.
John, Jennifer, Anthony and Hansen treated us like rock stars! We sampled many different IPAs and the appetizer selection they offer is delicious, unique and priced super reasonable! I for one can't wait to go back and eat another giant pretzel complimented by a beer from the brewery of the week. I would like to personally thank our new friends at San Diego Beerworks for a night designed to enhance what we think, feel and know about beer.
